The Historic Waterloo Hotel was chosen to host the Queen's entourage on her 1953 Coronation Tour to New Zealand , therefore when the hotel was converted for budget accommodation and backpackers hostel, the luxuries remained. Downtown Backpackers Wellington has a different and unique feel to that of other budget accommodation and backpackers hostel properties in New Zealand and features facilities such as private tiled bathrooms in most of the double, twin and single rooms, elegant staircases, high ceilings and you can't go past sampling the menu in the on-site café that is located in the old hotel's ballroom.
